Local Motion, Leigh 2012
Two undulating benches flank the entrance plaza to Leigh Sports Village and create a public space outside the stadium. The profile of each bench was created by tracking the trajectory of the knees and ankles of local students running toward the stadium. When people pass between the benches at night, the running movement is recalled in an animated sequence of light along each bench.
The artwork was commissioned by Wigan Council and fabricated by Millimetre. Denki-Jin provided the sensing and control of the dynamic lighting. Film and photos by James Medcraft. The artwork profile was taken from film footage of Kirsty Chapman and Lauren Hardman from the Girls Football Development Programme at Wigan and Leigh College.
